Canadian
pianist Elissa Miller-Kay (Brooklyn, NY)
is currently a doctoral student and adjunct instructor at New York University
where she studies with Martin Canin. From 2003 to 2006 Elissa was a scholarship
student at Oberlin Conservatory where she studied with Peter Takács.
She completed a 4 year Honors Bachelor of Music degree in 3 years. Upon
completion of her studies at Oberlin, Elissa was elected to the Oberlin
chapter of the Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honorary Society. Elissa earned her
Masters of Music degree from Mannes College where she studied with Victor
Rosenbaum. Elissa has won many awards and scholarships over the years including
prizes in the York Region, Davenport and Kiwanis music festivals. Recent
awards include the Ben Steinberg Musical Legacy Award (2006), the Dorothy
Morse Scholarship at New York University (2008). In Canada, Elissa has
performed with York Symphony Orchestra (2003 and 2008) and, on a week’s
notice, with the Oakville Chamber Orchestra (2006). The Oakville performances
received excellent reviews and were listed as one of the “Top Ten
Events of 2006” by the Halton Arts Review. In February 2009, Elissa
performed a recital with cellist Sascha Groschang at Weill Recital Hall,
Carnegie Hall in New York City. Elissa also has a passion for science and
mathematics. Prior to attending Oberlin, Elissa studied biochemistry at
the University of Toronto. She was a National Biology Scholar in the University
of Toronto National Biology Competition in 1999. She won a Regent’s
In-Course Scholarship, was a Dean’s List Scholar, and was awarded
the Gollop Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry. |
Pianist
Hye-Won Jo (Urbana, IL), a native Korea, is currently
pursuing the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance and literature
under Dr. Timothy Ehlen at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
where she is working as a recipient of Teaching Assistant in accompanying.
Miss Jo received her Master of Music degree from Indiana University with
accelerated graduation and high distinction. As the highest ranked graduate,
she earned her Bachelor of Music degree with the Highest Honors Prize from
Seoul National University. She has been a recipient of numerous awards
including fellowship and scholarship from Indiana University and Seoul
National University and assistantship from University of Illinois. She
also won the Best Honor Prize from the university president of SNU, awarded
among less than one percent of the top student body. She is a 28-time winner
in national and international competitions of US and Korea. As the grand
prize winner of the Kyunhyang Music Competition, she was awarded a piano
as the trophy. Also, she is given her debut performance at Carnegie Hall,
New York. As an outstanding scholar of US and Korea, she wrote a book and
appeared on the Education Broadcasting System to introduce a strategy to
improve scholastic ability. |
Wen-Hui
Lily Lin (Brooklyn, NY) was born in Taiwan and grew up in Bangkok,
Thailand. Ms. Lin has performed concerts and participated in music festivals
in Russia, Argentina,Taiwan, Thailand, Spain, and the United States. In
2006, she was invited to Argentina and performed the Mozart's Double Piano
Concerto with the Tucumán Symphony Orchestra under the direction
of Roberto Buffo. During her stay in Argentina, she also gave a recital
in the Alberti Teatre, Tucumán. In 2007, she studied at the Moscow
State (Tchaikovsky) Conservatory with renowned pianist Irina Plotnikova
and performed at the Rachmaninoff Hall. In addition, Ms. Lin has participated
in master classes with acclaimed musicians including Menahem Pressler,
Oxana Yablonskaya, Alexandre Kobrin, and Maxim Philipov. As an active chamber
musician, she has participated in master classes with members of the Miami
String Quartet, Vermeer String Quartet, and Ida Kavafian. Her extended
interested in Contemporary Music has led her to perform with the Hartt
School Bass Ensemble at the Bang on a Can Contemporary Music Marathon in
New York in 2007. Ms. Lin is currently a DMA candidate in piano performance
at the University of Connecticut and is a student of Dr. Neal Larrabee.
She is a recipient of the Evelyn Bonar Storrs piano scholarship as well
as a Teaching Assistant at the University. Her other principal teachers
include Paul Rutman,Tongsuang Israngkun and Michael Dellinger.

| Andrew Hofstrand (NY, NY)
received a full-tuition scholarship to attend the University of Iowa in
Piano Performance for his bachelor's degree where he studied with Dr. Rene
Lecuona and Dr. Uriel Tsachor. He graduated in 2007 with degrees in Physics(B.S.),
Astronomy(B.S.), Mathematics(B.S.), and Piano Performance(B.A.). Mr. Hofstrand
is currently finishing his Master's Degree at the Manhattan School of Music
in Piano Performance studying with Mr. Andre-Michel Schub. Mr. Hofstrand
has performed in masterclasses with pianists such as Joseph Kalechstein,
Susan Starr and Angela Chow and is currently working on a project to record
and perform the complete cycle of solo piano music by Arnold Schoenberg.

Ellen
Price Elder, (Hattiesburg, MS) is Assistant Professor of Piano
at the Winters School of Music at William Carey University in Hattiesburg,
MS. She teaches applied and class piano and related courses in piano literature
and pedagogy, and directs the Piano Ensemble. She holds the D.M.A. in Piano
Pedagogy and Performance and the M.M. in Piano Performance and Literature
from the University of Michigan. She received her B.M. in Piano Performance
from the University of Southern Mississippi. She has served on the faculties
at the University of Michigan, the University of Michigan-Dearborn, Eastern
Michigan University, and Schoolcraft College. Dr. Elder is the winner of
many competitions and awards. In 2009, she was selected to receive the
HEADWAE award (Higher Education Appreciation Day/Working for Academic Excellence)
established in 1988 by the Mississippi Legislature to honor faculty who
have contributed to the promotion of academic excellence at each of the
state's public and private institutions.She was one of thirty-seven pianists
chosen to compete in the 2006 Johann Sebastian Bach International Competition
in Leipzig, Germany (one of three chosen from the U.S.). Other honors include
first place in the Ann Arbor Society for the Musical Arts Competition and
the Lansing Matinee Musicale Competition, and second-place in the Memphis
International Beethoven Sonata Competition (1999). She was the recipient
of the MTNA Star Award, as well as the Joanne A. Smith Piano Pedagogy Award
for class piano teaching (for two consecutive years). She has appeared
as soloist with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, Mississippi Symphony
Chamber Orchestra, University of Southern Mississippi Symphony Orchestra,
Hattiesburg City Band, and the University of Michigan Philharmonia Orchestra.
In addition to her college teaching, Dr. Elder also serves as Director
of the Carey Institute of Fine Arts. She has established and taught the
first piano group classes offered for children and adults through the Institute.
Dr. Elder is the Vice-President for Pre-College Performances through the
Mississippi Music Teachers Association. She is married to Brian Keith Elder,
senior software engineer of Quicken Loans, Inc. of Livonia, MI. |
Pianist
Eunyoung Kim (Belmont, MA), a virtuoso soloist and chamber
musician with a large repertoire, has performed in many concerts with prominent
organizations in her native Korea, the United States and Japan. Ms. Kim
is a member of La Scena concert duo, Musica Anatolia International Contemporary
Music Ensemble, Fifth Tier and Xanthos New Music Ensembles. She performs
many genres including classical, opera, musical theater and jazz. As an
advocate for new music, she regularly performs chamber and solo works at
the Boston University and collaborates with composers at colleges and universities.

| Born
in Taipei, Taiwan in 1989, Fan-Ya Lin (Ogden, UT) began
her piano study at age four. Fan-Ya attended Dun-Hua Elementary school
(studied with Shu-Fen Zheng and Mei-Fu Chen), The Junior High division
of The Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University
(studied with Qing-Wen Tu), The Affiliated Senior High School of National
Taiwan Normal University (studied with Dr. Ru-Lin Lai). With great love
and passion for music, it is Fan-Ya's ultimate goal to become a concert
pianist.
Fan-Ya has been selected as top prize winners of numerous piano competitions
in Taiwan, including the first place winner of the 2000 Mandarin Daily
News National Piano Competition, the first place winner of the 2002 KAWAI
National Piano Competition, the second place winner of the 2003 YAMAHA
National Piano Competition, Honorable Mention in the 2006 New Art National
Music Competition, Honorable Mention in the 2006 Hsing Tein Kong Music
Competition for Talented Youth, and the first place winner of the 2007
National Chamber Music Competition.
In 2007, Fan-Ya was selected by The 3rd Treasury of Young Musicians Project
as one of the "rising stars" and one of the most promising young
pianists in Taiwan. With this honor, Fan-Ya had the privilege of receiving
a series of rigorous training sponsored by the Taiwan Government to prepare
for a professional career in music, as well as representing Taiwan to
participate in several International Piano Competitions.
Furthermore, Fan-Ya also attended many music festivals and piano master
classes given by renowned pianists and master teachers such as Gwhyneth
Chen, Ivo Pogorelich, Gergely Boganyi, Lev klychkov, Dr. Boris Berman,
Dr. Rektor Siegfried Mauser, Tamas Vasary, Sung-Won Lee, Nelson Delle-Vigne
Fabbri, Stephane Lemelin, Dr. Nelita True and Dr. Regina Yeh.
In 2008, Fan-Ya was accepted into several prestigious music schools in
Taiwan (National Taiwan Normal University and Taipei National University
of the Arts) and in the U.S. (The Juilliard School, Oberlin Conservatory
of Music, and Weber State University). In the fall of 2008, Fan-Ya received
a four-year full scholarship to attend Weber State University in Utah,
and is currently a piano student of Dr. Yu-Jane Yang and Dr. Ralph van
der Beek.
In 2009, Fan-Ya won the first prize of UMTA Piano Concerto Competition,
and had a chance to perform at Assembly Hall in Temple Square. She also
won the Weber State University Concerto Night Competition, and performed
Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with WSU Symphony at Austad
Auditorium.

Born
in Seoul, Korea, Narae Joo (Rochester, NY) received her
Bachelor of Music from Seoul National University with prof. HaeSun Paik.
She holds a MM degree from the University of Michigan where she has studied
under Prof. Arthur Greene while being the recipient of the Beverly Franzau
Baker Scholarship. From 2006, Ms. Joo is pursuing her doctorate in Piano
Performance at the Eastman School of Music as a fellowship student under
Prof. Natalya Antonova. In 2007, she began collaborative piano as her dual
major with Prof. Jean Barr. In 2006, she was the winner of the University
of Michigan Concerto Competition. She has also been chosen as the Second
Prize Winner in the 2007 Bradshaw & Buono International piano competition
and was granted a winners’ recital in N.Y. Narae Joo has also received
several awards and prestigious scholarship in Korea including Ewon national
Music Competition award, the Korea National Scholarship Competition and
the KumHo Art Foundation Young Artist Award. She has performed several
times with chamber groups and has received the Virginia Pleasants Accompanist
Award from the Civic morning musical, INC in 2006. She has participated
in the Quartet Program as a staff pianist in 2007 and she has been a fellow
at Music Academy of the West in the summer of 2008. This summer she will
participate in the Moulin D’Ande Academy in France. |
In
2007 Ludwig Treviranus (Tallahassee, FL) was granted a
scholarship as a Maori/Pacific Island scholar to complete his Master of
Music at University of Auckland, New Zealand. In 2008, he graduated with
a Master degree in Piano Performance. Throughout his studies at University
of Auckland, he gaineda wide experience in accompanying and chamber music,
particularly with violin, cello and flute. He performed many of the major
piano trio works of Brahms, Mendelssohn, Babadjanian and Martinu. As well
as chamber recitalist, Ludwig also worked as an accompanist for the Opera
students from Auckland and Wellington University. In 2004, Ludwig was percussionist
in the University of Auckland Orchestra and alongside that, played piano
for many chamber works involving percussion and piano, including Bartok’s
Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion, and works by John Psatha’s
for piano and percussion.
Outside of University of Auckland, Ludwig was deeply involved in community
music groups, such as children’s theatre, public schools, and rest
homes. Ludwig took leadership roles in encouraging Pacific Islanders to
study music, and often gave talks on the benefits of studying music during
University orientation days, mainly focusing on Maori and Pacific Island
students. As a regular spokesperson for University of Auckland for the
past three years Ludwig has addressed and run activities for incoming music
students. He also has an interest in jazz piano and performs with jazz
and salsa combos for private corporate functions.
A regular solo recitalist throughout Auckland and Wellington regions, Ludwig
has performed in Howick All Saints’ Church, Whittaker’s Piano
Museum, and at the University of Auckland. In July 2007 he performed Beethoven’s
Piano Concerto No.1 with the Hutt Valley Orchestra in Wellington as a fundraiser
for Te Omanga Hospice at St Oran’s College and in 2008 performed
Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto “Emperor”.
Before his admission into Florida State University, Ludwig worked in Auckland
as composer and Narrator for Tim Bray Productions in the show “Twits”
for children’s theatre, with thirty performances at the Takapuna
‘Pump House’.
Now studying at Florida State University, Ludwig is working towards a Doctorate
of Music and on completing would like to find work in Australia as University
Professor and concert recitalist. |
Pianist
Chia-Ching Shen – Tallahassee, FL, a native of Taiwan,
Shen began her piano studies at age four. She is not only an active pianist,
however, but a cellist as well. She is a winner of both piano and cello
awards in national competitions which include the second prize in YAMAHA
Piano Competition, the fourth prize in National Taiwan Piano Competition,
and the first prize in Taipei National Cello Competition.
Since 2007, Chia-Ching Shen has been enrolled in the Doctor of Music in
Piano Performance degree program at The Florida State University, studying
under Dr. James Nalley. She was the 2007-2008 recipient of The Streem Award,
and winner of the annual Chapman Piano Competition at FSU. Shen received
her Masters in Music in Piano Performance from Mannes College of Music
(New York), studying under Professor Victor Rosenbaum; and her Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree in Piano Performance with a Minor in Composition from
the Taipei National University of the Arts, piano studying under Professor
Mei-Ling Wang.
Shen has performed in the United States, Austria and Taiwan as a soloist,
accompanist, and pianist in chamber music. Performing in Master classes
with Boris Bloch, Paul Gulda, Vladimir Feltsman and Todd Phillips (Orion
String Quartet). Currently, she holds a teaching assistantship in piano
at Florida State University. |
Julian
Toha – Tallahassee, FL Originally from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida,
Julian is currently an undergraduate Junior majoring in Piano Performance
at the Florida State University College of Music. His principal teacher
is Leonard Mastrogiacomo, but he also takes lessons in duo piano with Norma
Mastrogiacomo and has studied organ with Michael Corzine. Earlier this
year, Julian premiered with the Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra performing
the Samuel Barber Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 38. He was offered
this opportunity after winning first place in their 7th Annual Young Artist
Concerto Competition. Since then, he has also performed the same work with
the Florida State University Philharmonia after winning the 2008 Young
Artist Competition at Florida State Univesity College of Music. Recently,
he won second place and received the Max Kaplan Award in the LaGrange Symphony
Orchestra Young Artists Competition. He also was named a finalist in the
21st Annual Northwest Florida Symphony Concerto Competition. In April 2009,
Julian was named the 2009 Presser Scholar for Florida State University.
This national award comes with a title and scholarship. In the summer after
his freshman year, Julian attended the Asolo Song Festival & Institute
of Song Interpretation in Northern Italy. There he spent most of his time
performing and collaborating with artists from Italy, Russia, and the United
States. Earlier that same summer, Julian placed 2nd in the Grey Perry Collegiate
Piano Competition and won 1st place in the Byrd Piano Ensemble Competition.
At the College of Music, Julian regularly collaborates with other pianists
and instrumentalists. After performing the complete original transcription
of Gustav Holst's The Planets for two pianos in the Fall of 2008, he is
currently working on another duo piano concert with friend and pianist
Matthew Bell. They will be performing various works including Carnival
of the Animals for two pianos and chamber orchestra by Camille Saint-Saëns. |

5. UPON NOTIFICATION, EACH SEMI-FINALIST WILL THEN PAY

16 SEMI-FINALS. SHOULD A SEMI-FINALIST BE UNABLE TO COMPETE, AN ALTERNATE

6. THE 12 SEMI-FINALISTS WILL PERFORM ONE BEETHOVEN PIANO
SONATA OF HIS/HER CHOOSING FROM MEMORY FOR A PANEL OF ADJUDICATORS AND A
LIVE AUDIENCE AT THE HARRIS CONCERT HALL ON MAY 16, 2009. THE JUDGES WILL
CHOOSE SIX FINALISTS TO COMPETE ON MAY 17, PERFORMING THE CONTESTANTS’
REMAINING SONATA. THE JUDGES WILL SELECT THE WINNERS AND THE AWARDS WILL
BE DISTRIBUTED.
7. THE ORDER OF PERFORMANCE BY THE SEMI-FINALISTS AND FINAISTS
WILL BE DETERMINED BY DRAWING.
8. THE BEETHOVEN CLUB WILL PROVIDE HOUSING FOR THE SEMI-FINALISTS
AT THE FOGELMAN CENTER ON THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. THE BEETHOVEN CLUB WILL
ONLY PROVIDE HOUSING FOR TWO NIGHTS. IF A THIRD NIGHT IS NEEDED, CONTESTANT
WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT. NO AMENITIES (MEALS, PHONE CALLS, ETC.) WILL
